This is an inductive activity designed around the use of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) with the theme of global awareness and children’s rights. These cards can be used with beginner through advanced learners, as the students will use language at their ability level to process the cards. For the best inductive activity sort the cards into two groups. One group represents the main idea of the topic. The other group provides information that supports the main idea but is in some way opposite. Here the main idea is that some children do not have all the things they need to be happy, healthy and safe. The contrast is children who are happy, healthy, and safe. As you pass out the cards have students look at the cards and determine what is the same about all the cards the represent the main idea. I like to follow this up with an activity of what we can do to help students who do not have everything they need to be happy, healthy and safe as a brain storm. I have also done this activity as pre-activity to raising donations for charities like UNICEF with groups of students, or letter writing campaigns in support of organizations that help children.
