Trees Riddle Running Dictation

By saradavila

This is a running dictation activity for beginner or  pre-intermediate  EFL/ESL learners. This is an English for Specific Purposes activity (ESP) focused on language related to biology or science. This is a great four skills activity that incorporates reading comprehension with a task activity that has kinesthetic movement and interpersonal communication at the core. Cut the sentences out as strips and place on the wall. Pair up students and have students go to the wall read the sentence and return to their sitting partner. The sitting partner listens and writes the sentence as the running partner speaks. The running partner may need to run back to the sentence several times. In this running dictation activity students are provided with riddle like clues. When all the sentences are collected students must discuss together to determine what the subject is; in this case tress. I like to follow up this activity by going outside with a class and having students draw a tree and label the parts using the information learned in the dictation activity. This can be especially engaging for students with a higher natural intelligence.
